1.5 years ago, I made the decision to embark on an entrepreneurial journey.
There are a series of events that led to this decision, and I thought of sharing it with all of you :)
A short glimpse from the past
The start to my professional life was in fact very rocky. I lost two jobs in the first 15 months of my professional career. Life turned for better after that.
I had a good stint at Turtlemint, where I joined as an early employee and worked under the leadership of Dhirendra Mahyavanshi. Here, I got a chance to observe how to build a business from scratch, very closely. I cherish this place the most for a lot of things but the one that tops the list is that here I found a great friend, mentor and my Cofounder, Priyadarshan Gupta
Then, I explored further into Fintech with the lending segment and got a chance to work with Paroma Chatterjee and Uday Sinha at Lendingkart. This taught me the dynamics of B2B sales
And my last stint before entering the world of Entrepreneurship was with Unacademy. To work with Roman Saini and Vivek Sinha was an eye opener. This is where I learnt the true meaning of “pushing myself to achieve the highest potential possible”.
In hindsight, I operated with the motto of learning as much as I could.
Sharing the reasons for my decision to startup
Ambition to build something of my own and execute it at scale
Awed by the impact that one could create in the lives of people at scale
Took inspiration from people I worked with. I have spoken about them above
To create wealth for myself and my friends & family
I have been playing with this idea for the last 1.5 years. I would love to share more about it but I believe I would not do justice to it with just a few sentences. But here are a few things we did:
Established the core founding team. I believe this was one of the most important decision and created a major impact on everything else that followed later
Went into extreme research mode. This helped us ideate, experiment and evaluate
Built, what I would call a proof of concept
Raised a small angel round
And a few pivots later, we reached a stage where we are generating some revenue and operating profitably for us to experiment and survive for the next phase of our journey
I can comfortably say that these last few months have been a phase of self-discovery. It helped me pick up a few learnings that I would like to share with all of you.
Most of the days in a month are going to be bad; We must deal with it
It is extremely important to identify the core need of our paying customers. - Spend a lot of time researching, experimenting and evaluating it
Execution is key. There is a good chance that what you are building has already been thought of, built, failed at. Don’t let that deter you. A mentor once told me, “Just out-execute everyone else”
Be patient with outcomes and impatient with your actions
And most importantly - Believe in yourself.
